This model leads the group because it pairs a large bag with a fast brush. Its 5.6 to 1 brush to wheel ratio means the brush turns more than five times for each wheel rotation, which flicks leaves, clippings and even pinecones into the hopper at ordinary tractor speed. The 28 cubic foot flow-through bag fills from back to front, so it uses its whole volume rather than packing the first few inches.
The tradeoff is size and tow demand. A full 28 cubic foot bag of damp leaves is heavy, and a small lawn tractor may struggle with it on a slope. Against the 42 inch model with a 12 cubic foot bag, you dump about half as often, but you need more storage room and a stronger tow vehicle.
Ownership is simple but not maintenance free. The bag fabric is the part that fades, tears and mildews first, so empty it and let it dry before storage.
What works
- 5.6 to 1 ratio gives fast brush speed
- Flow-through bag uses its full volume
- 28 cu ft hopper cuts the number of dumps
- Dump control reachable from the seat
