The Greenworks trimmer is the only brushless tool in this lineup, driving a 20-inch dual-action steel blade at 4,000 strokes per minute with a stated cutting capacity of 1.1 inches. A brushless motor wastes less energy as heat and has no carbon brushes to wear, so the trimmer gets more work from each charge and the motor should outlast a brushed one. The 2.0Ah battery and charger are included.
The 4,000 SPM figure is much higher than the 2,400 to 2,800 SPM claimed for budget cordless trimmers, and the faster stroke gives a cleaner shear on soft growth. A built-in debris collector sweeps clippings aside, and a wrap-around handle allows multi-position cutting.
It gives up two inches of blade against the 22-inch Black+Decker, but its capacity is nearly 50 percent greater than that machine's three-quarter-inch rating. Keep the blade clean, oil it lightly and store the 24V battery indoors. It suits owners who want the best cut quality and a motor with the longest likely life. In year three the battery is the part most likely to fade, so buy a spare while the platform is still stocked and keep the debris collector clear. Compared with the Craftsman, the Greenworks wins on cutting quality but is not a platform pick unless you plan to add 24V tools.
What works
- Brushless motor wastes less energy and wears less
- 4000 SPM blade gives a clean shear
- 1.1 inch stated capacity is the highest here
- Debris collector sweeps clippings aside
Watch out for
- 20 inch blade covers less per pass than 22 inches
- Single 2.0Ah battery limits long jobs
