A gas chipper shredder is a small engine driving a rotor with blades and hammers. One chute takes branches, another takes leaves and twigs, and the result is a pile of chips. The buying problem is that most machines in this class share the same engine size, branch rating and reduction ratio on paper, yet differ widely in support, safety and the way they jam.

This guide explains how to read engine, capacity and warranty claims for 3 inch class chippers, and where the differences actually matter. Only one brand-name maker has a chipper in this group, so we compare it with comparable machines. Start with the picks above for the short list, then read the reviews below.

Before you buy

6 Criteria to Look For Before Buying a Champion and Comparable 3 Inch Wood Chipper

  1. 01

Match chute capacity to your largest limb

The rated capacity of 3 inches applies to the side chipper chute on the Champion, Westinghouse, BILT HARD, Landworks and SuperHandy, while the top hopper only takes about half an inch. A 3 inch limb is the ceiling for dry softwood, and dense or green hardwood limits you to 2 inches or less in practice. If you regularly cut limbs near 4 inches, the MechMaxx is the only machine here that reaches it. Measure the limbs you cut, not the average, and leave a margin of half an inch.

  2. 02

Read the engine as a whole

The Champion uses a 224cc OHV engine, while the Westinghouse and MechMaxx are 212cc and the Landworks and SuperHandy are 7HP machines of similar size. A few cc matter little, but the brand and support behind the engine matter more. A 3,600 RPM direct drive, as on the Westinghouse, sends engine torque straight to the rotor. Check the oil capacity, the fuel tank size and whether the engine is EPA or CARB certified for your state.

  3. 03

    Weigh warranty and support

Warranty terms in this group range from 90 days on the BILT HARD to 1 year on the Landworks to 2 years on the Champion, Westinghouse and MechMaxx. The Champion also offers free lifetime technical support. A chipper is a machine that needs parts such as blades and belts, so ask who sells them. A longer warranty is more valuable than a slightly larger engine for a machine you use a few days per year.

  4. 04

    Look at collection and discharge

Collection bag size varies from 2 bushels on the Champion and BILT HARD to a 24.6 gallon bag on the Westinghouse. The Landworks lets you aim chips between 90 and 145 degrees, and the MechMaxx rotates 360 degrees. If you chip into a bag, a bigger bag with a zipper saves time. If you chip into a pile or cart, discharge direction matters more.

  5. 05

    Know what jams a chipper

Green leafy material, vines, palm fronds and pine cones jam every machine in this group, and manufacturers say so in the fine print. A rear clean-out port, as on the Champion, and an inspection window, as on the BILT HARD, make clearing a jam faster. Always stop the engine and wait for the rotor to stop before reaching in. Feed branches butt end first and avoid stuffing too many at once.

  6. 06

    Plan fuel and storage

Small engines suffer from ethanol blended fuel left to sit. Landworks and SuperHandy both advise 87+ octane unleaded without ethanol, and a fuel stabilizer is wise for any of these machines. Drain the tank or run the carburetor dry before winter. Several of these machines ship without engine oil, so budget a quart and check the level before the first start.

Champion Power Equipment 3 In 224cc Chipper Shredder
224cc OHV engine3 in chipper chute1/2 in shredder chute2 bushel bag
Check price on Amazon
Best for: Homeowners who want a 3 inch chipper from a recognised engine brand with real warranty and tech support.

Champion is the only brand-name entry here that actually makes a chipper, and the engine is the reason to buy it. A 224cc single cylinder OHV four-stroke is slightly larger than the 209 to 212cc engines on the rivals, and Champion backs it with a 2 year limited warranty and free lifetime technical support. That is a better ownership story than the 90 day and 1 year warranties on some competing machines.

The design is the usual two-path layout. A chipper chute with hardened steel blades takes branches up to 3 inches, while a separate shredder chute handles leaves, shrubbery and debris of about half an inch or less. A rear access clean-out port lets you clear a jam without disassembling the housing, which is where most owner frustration comes from. Compared with the Westinghouse, you get a slightly larger engine and the better support, while the Westinghouse gives you a bigger collection bag.

Ownership is straightforward but not zero effort. A 0.92 gallon tank and 0.63 quart oil capacity mean fuel and oil are simple, but use fresh fuel and a stabilizer, because carburetors gum up when ethanol gas sits through winter. Change the oil after the first few hours and again every season, sharpen or replace the blades when chips turn ragged and keep the shredder hammers clear of wet leaves. The 2 bushel bag is small, so for long sessions plan to empty it often.

What works

  • 224cc engine is the largest among the 3 inch machines here
  • Two year warranty with free lifetime technical support
  • Rear clean-out port clears jams without taking it apart
  • Separate chute for shredding leaves and light debris

Watch out for

  • The 2 bushel bag fills quickly on a big cleanup job
  • Priced above the generic 7 HP chippers in this lineup
  • Shredder chute only takes debris of about half an inch

Westinghouse WChip3 212cc 3 In Gas Chipper Shredder
212cc OHV engine3,600 RPM direct drive3 in capacity24.6 gal bag
Check price on Amazon
Best for: Big cleanup days where a large bag with a bottom zipper saves repeated emptying.

The Westinghouse WChip3 is built around a direct drive layout, where the engine crankshaft turns the rotor with no belt or clutch between them. That sends the full torque of the 212cc four-stroke engine to the blades at 3,600 RPM, which helps push 3 inch branches through without bogging. Direct drive is also simple, with fewer wear parts than belt designs, though it means the blades spin whenever the engine runs.

The collection setup is the best of the group. A 24.6 gallon bag holds about 2.8 bushels, a metal rod keeps it open over the discharge chute and a bottom zipper lets you dump chips without lifting the whole bag. Compared with the Champion's 2 bushel bag, that means fewer stops on a big job. Dual hardened steel chipper blades handle branches up to 3 inches and four steel hammers shred twigs and leaves at the top hopper, for a 15:1 reduction.

The tradeoff against the Champion is support and engine size. A 212cc motor is a touch smaller and the brand has less of a chipper track record than Champion. As with any direct drive machine, stay clear of the rotor when it is running, shut off the engine before clearing a jam and avoid chipping wet or green material that wraps the hammers. Use fresh fuel with stabilizer and change the oil after the first few hours.

What works

  • 24.6 gallon bag with a bottom zipper dumps chips cleanly
  • Direct drive delivers full engine torque with no belt
  • Dual hardened chipper blades take branches to 3 inches
  • Four steel hammers shred twigs and leaves at the hopper

Watch out for

  • 212cc engine is a little smaller than the Champion engine
  • Bag is bulky to carry and store when it is full of chips
  • Blades spin whenever the engine runs, so safety discipline matters

BILT HARD 7.5HP 3 In Gas Wood Chipper Shredder with Tow Hitch
7.5HP, 224cc3 in chipper2 blades, 6 hammersInspection window
Check price on Amazon
Best for: Buyers who want the most shredding hardware and an inspection window at a mid-tier price.

The BILT HARD stands out on paper for its cutting hardware: two chipper blades and six J-type hammers on a reinforced rotor disc, where most 3 inch rivals use two blades and four hammers. More hammers help shred leaves and twigs more finely, and the inspection window lets you check blades and clear jams without opening the housing. A 9.14 ft-lb torque figure is stated, which is more transparent than many listings.

The caution is consistency. The title says 7.5HP and 224cc while the bullet says 7HP and 209cc, so check the exact engine on the page before buying. The warranty is also the shortest in the group, at 90 days against defects in materials and workmanship, compared with 2 years from the Champion. A tow hitch is advertised, but treat it as an add-on convenience, since a 3 inch machine is light enough to move by hand.

The machine is aimed at dry branches and yard debris. Avoid wet wood, vines, palm branches, pine cones and anything petrified, because those clog or damage the blades. Check the six hammers for wear each season, sharpen or replace the chipper blades and drain old fuel before winter. If you want service after the first season, the Champion is the safer ownership choice.

What works

  • Six J-type hammers shred leaves and twigs more finely
  • Inspection window helps clear jams and check blades
  • Torque figure of 9.14 ft-lbs is stated in the listing
  • Two chipper blades are mounted on a reinforced rotor disc

Watch out for

  • Warranty is only 90 days, the shortest in this lineup
  • Listing gives conflicting engine sizes of 209cc and 224cc
  • Not suited to wet wood, vines, or palm fronds here

Landworks Rotor 7 HP 3 In Gas Chipper Shredder Mulcher
7HP, 3,600 RPM3 in capacity15:1 reduction90 to 145 deg chute
Check price on Amazon
Best for: Owners who fill a cart or bag and want to aim the chips accurately.

The Landworks Rotor is a classic 7HP, 3 inch machine with a few smart touches. A large extended feeding hopper makes it easier to load awkward branches, and a vertical discharge chute with an adjustable guide lets you aim chips between 90 and 145 degrees. That control is useful when you are filling a wheelbarrow, a bag or a mulch bed rather than just piling chips on the ground.

The engine is a recoil start horizontal four-stroke running at 3,600 RPM, which matches the SuperHandy and the other generic 7 HP machines. The maker advises 87+ unleaded and no ethanol, a recommendation worth following because ethanol blends gum a small carburetor during storage. Compared with the Champion, the Landworks has a smaller engine and only a 1 year warranty, but it costs less and is lighter to push around. Against the SuperHandy, it offers the same horsepower and a similar design, so choose on price and discharge convenience.

Treat it as a seasonal cleanup machine. Avoid fresh greens, pine cones, palm fronds, vines and petrified wood, all of which jam it. Fill the oil before first start because it ships without engine oil, check the blades for sharpness and clean the hopper after use. The 1 year warranty excludes blades and consumables, so budget for spares.

What works

  • Adjustable discharge guide aims chips between 90 and 145 degrees
  • Large extended hopper loads awkward branches more easily
  • Light enough for one person to wheel around a small yard
  • Maker advises ethanol free fuel, which protects the carburetor

Watch out for

  • Smaller engine and shorter warranty than the Champion
  • Ships without engine oil, so fill it before first start
  • Blades and consumables are excluded from the warranty

SuperHandy 7HP 3 In Gas Chipper Shredder Mulcher
7HP 4 stroke3 in capacity15:1 reductionSlanted housing
Check price on Amazon
Best for: Owners with lots of fallen leaves who plan to add the vacuum kit for mulching.

The SuperHandy is the original of a design that Landworks and others copy closely, and it is a sensible 3 in 1 machine. A side chute takes branches up to 3 inches, the top hopper shreds smaller debris up to half an inch and an optional leaf vacuum kit mulches leaves from the ground. The slanted housing is meant to reduce jams compared with a boxy design.

It is EPA and CARB certified, which matters if you live in California or another state with small engine rules. A tow bar kit and the vacuum kit are both sold separately, so the base price does not include the accessories that make it useful for large properties. Compared with the Champion, it has a smaller 7 HP engine class and no mention of lifetime support, though it ships ready for leaf mulching with the optional kit.

Treat the accessories as part of the real cost. Add engine oil before first start, use fresh unleaded fuel without ethanol, and avoid fresh greens, pine cones, palm branches and vines. Check hammers and blades each season and clear the slanted chute after each session. If you only chip branches and never mulch leaves, the Champion or Westinghouse is a more complete package.

What works

  • Optional leaf vacuum kit turns it into a leaf mulcher
  • Slanted housing is designed to reduce jams in the chute
  • EPA and CARB certified for states with small engine rules
  • Side chute takes 3 inch branches and the hopper shreds twigs

Watch out for

  • Tow bar and vacuum kits are sold as separate items
  • Smaller engine class than the Champion and no lifetime support
  • Not suitable for fresh greens, pine cones or palm fronds

MechMaxx 4 In 212cc Towable Wood Chipper
212cc 7HP engine4 in capacity20:1 reductionEmergency stop
Check price on Amazon
Best for: Property owners with larger limbs who want 4 inch capacity and a tow bar.

The MechMaxx moves up a class by taking 4 inch branches with the same 212cc, 7HP class of engine. It does it with a drum-style setup of two blades and an anvil, a 20:1 reduction ratio and a 360 degree rotating discharge chute with an adjustable deflector. The extra inch of capacity changes what you can do with storm-damaged limbs and pruning from larger trees.

Safety and handling are better than on the 3 inch machines. An emergency stop button next to the feed port stops the machine quickly, and a tow bar and two 14 inch wheels make it easy to move with a lawn tractor. The warranty is 2 years on the machine and 2 years on the engine, which matches the Champion. Compared with the Champion and the Westinghouse, it costs more, but it is the only one here that reaches 4 inches.

Expect more power demand, which is why branches near 4 inches should be dry and fed butt end first. Use fresh fuel, check the blade and anvil gap, change the oil early and. If you rarely cut limbs over 2 inches, the extra expense is not needed, and the Champion will serve you with less to maintain.

What works

  • Takes 4 inch branches, one inch more than the others here
  • Emergency stop button sits right beside the feed port
  • 360 degree discharge chute with an adjustable deflector
  • Two year warranty on both the machine and the engine

Watch out for

  • Costs noticeably more than the 3 inch machines here
  • Larger and heavier to move than the 3 inch chippers here
  • A 7 HP engine will bog on dense wood near the 4 inch limit

What the numbers on the box really mean

The specs manufacturers lead with, translated into what they tell you about real-world performance.

Engine displacement (cc) and HP

Displacement is the engine's cylinder volume, and horsepower is the output rating. A 212 to 224cc four stroke typically makes about 6.5 to 7.5 HP. The ratings are gross figures from the engine maker, not measured at the rotor.

Watch forListings sometimes disagree. The BILT HARD lists 7.5HP and 224cc in the title and 7HP and 209cc in a bullet, so confirm before buying.

Chipper capacity

The maximum branch diameter that the side chute can take, usually rated on dry softwood. Capacity is limited by chute size, blade length and engine torque. The top hopper is a separate path for smaller debris.

Watch forHardwood and green wood reduce the real limit. The MechMaxx 4 inch figure should be treated as a ceiling for dry, well-fed branches.

Reduction ratio

The reduction ratio compares the volume of debris to the volume of the chips. A 15:1 ratio means fifteen piles become about one. Higher ratios come from finer chopping and denser chips.

Watch forThe 20:1 on the MechMaxx and the 15:1 on the Westinghouse, Landworks and SuperHandy apply to ideal dry material. Leafy debris gives less.

Direct drive vs belt drive

Direct drive couples the engine shaft to the rotor, sending all the torque with no belt or clutch. Belt drive uses belts and often a clutch, which cushions shocks but adds wear parts. The Westinghouse is direct drive.

Watch forDirect drive means the blades spin whenever the engine runs. Never reach into the chute until the engine is off and the rotor has stopped.

Warranty length

A warranty is the maker's promise to repair or replace defective parts. Chippers usually exclude wear items like blades. The Champion lists 2 years with lifetime tech support, and the BILT HARD lists 90 days.

Watch forRead what is excluded. The Landworks warranty excludes blades and consumables, which are the parts you replace most often.

Methodology

How We Evaluated These Champion and Comparable 3 Inch Wood Chippers

Engine and cutting hardware

We compared engine displacement, blade count and hammer count. The Champion's 224cc engine and the BILT HARD's six hammers lead their categories. We favored machines that state torque or blade details over those that only quote horsepower.

Capacity and real limits

We took each rated capacity as a ceiling for dry wood and looked at how the machine handles shredding. The MechMaxx at 4 inches sits above the 3 inch group, and every other machine shares a 3 inch rating. We noted listings with conflicting specs.

Warranty and support

We placed support terms in order, from the Champion and MechMaxx at 2 years to the Landworks at 1 year and the BILT HARD at 90 days. The Champion's lifetime technical support was weighed heavily. Parts availability was considered where listings gave information.

Collection and discharge

We compared bag sizes and chute control. The Westinghouse bag and the Landworks discharge guide are the standouts. We gave credit for a clean-out port or inspection window that speeds jam clearing.

Safety and ownership

We looked at emergency stops, fuel advice, certification and storage needs. The MechMaxx emergency stop and the SuperHandy EPA and CARB certification add value. Machines with an unclear manual were noted.

Brand Support vs Lowest Price

The real trade among these machines is ownership, not horsepower.

Brand support

The Champion offers a 2 year warranty and lifetime technical support, and the Westinghouse and MechMaxx list 2 years. These are the machines to buy if you want someone to call after year one.

Lowest price

The Landworks, SuperHandy and BILT HARD cost less with warranties of 1 year, unclear terms and 90 days. They share the same 7HP class of engine and work fine for seasonal cleanup if you accept the thinner support.

Choose a supported brand if you chip every season. Choose a budget machine if it is for one big cleanup.

For Storm Cleanup Specifically

Look for

Storm cleanup produces mixed limbs, often green and thick. Look for the largest capacity you can afford, a rear clean-out or inspection window for jams and an emergency stop. Expect to cut limbs to length first and chip them in dry batches.

In this comparison

The MechMaxx 4 Inch machine is the best fit because of its 4 inch capacity and emergency stop. The Champion is the best 3 inch choice because the rear clean-out port clears jams quickly.

When to Spend More

Spend more if

Spend more if you chip every season or have thick limbs. The Champion adds warranty and technical support, and the MechMaxx adds 4 inch capacity and an emergency stop.

Save if

Save if you chip once a year. The Landworks or the BILT HARD handle a spring cleanup, and the extra support of a more expensive machine would go unused.

Ownership

Maintenance schedule

The upkeep that decides whether this machine lasts two seasons or ten.

TaskIntervalWhy it matters
Change engine oilAfter the first 5 hours, then every seasonNew engines shed metal particles early. Fresh oil protects bearings in an air-cooled engine.
Sharpen or replace chipper bladesEvery 10 to 20 hoursDull blades tear wood and strain the engine. Sharp blades make clean chips.
Check hammers and fastenersEach seasonVibration loosens bolts and hammers wear. A loose hammer can damage the rotor.
Clean the air filterEvery 25 hoursChipping dust clogs the filter. A dirty filter makes the engine run rich and lose power.
Use fuel stabilizer or drain the tankBefore winter storageEthanol fuel gums a small carburetor. A dry carburetor starts first time next spring.
Clear the chute and housingAfter every sessionWet chips pack and rust the housing. Brush out the chute and dry it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 3 inch chipper enough for a typical yard?

For most suburban pruning, yes. A 3 inch capacity covers shrub and small tree limbs. If your trees drop limbs above 3 inches, you need a 4 inch machine such as the MechMaxx or a larger tow-behind chipper.

Why do some chippers cost much more with the same engine?

Price reflects support, warranty, build and extras like an emergency stop or tow bar. The Champion and MechMaxx cost more and add 2 year warranties. The engine size is similar across several of these machines.

Should I use ethanol fuel?

Avoid it if you can. Landworks and SuperHandy both advise unleaded without ethanol, because ethanol gums small carburetors during storage. Use a stabilizer and drain the tank before winter.

Can I chip green wood?

Yes, but it is harder. Green wood is heavy with moisture and tends to stringy chips and jams. Dry branches that have sat for a few weeks chip cleaner.

What safety gear do I need?

Wear eye protection, hearing protection, gloves without loose cuffs and snug clothing. Keep your hands out of the chute and stop the engine before clearing a jam. Keep bystanders and pets away from the discharge.

Is a shredder chute the same as a chipper chute?

No. The chipper chute takes branches up to about 3 inches and cuts them with blades. The shredder hopper takes leaves and twigs of about half an inch and uses hammers. Feeding thick wood into the shredder hopper can damage it.
